Built to be usable by everyone

Our target

We aim to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA. Because many readers here are older and most arrive on a phone, we treat AA as a floor rather than a finish line.

What has been done

• Every text and background pair was measured rather than eyeballed. Three color combinations were rejected during design for failing contrast, including the original gold on cream, which measured 2.15:1.
• Body text is set at 18px minimum, with a comfortable line length and generous line height.
• The whole page works by keyboard, with a visible focus ring designed to stay legible on every background used here.
• A skip link jumps past the navigation to the main content.
• Form fields have permanent visible labels. Errors say what to fix, appear next to the field, and are announced to screen readers.
• Expandable sections use native disclosure elements, so they work without JavaScript and are readable by assistive technology.
• All motion is limited to state changes, and is removed entirely if your device requests reduced motion.
• The page works at 320px wide and at 200% zoom without horizontal scrolling.
• Color never carries meaning on its own.

Known gaps

Contrast for text sitting over photographs was verified by calculation rather than direct measurement, because the photographs are served from another domain. We have set the overlays so the worst possible case still passes.

This site has not yet been tested with a screen reader by a person who uses one daily. Automated checks are not a substitute for that, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise.
